| Achieving an instrument rating is not only a fun pursuit but also a
worthwhile accomplishment. It provides the satisfaction of knowing
that you have gone a step beyond the private pilot certificate and have
demonstrated the skill and determination to achieve a higher and safer
set of standards. An instrument rating will better enable you to
use all the equipment in your airplane and have greater flexibility in
various weather conditions. An instrument rating may also lower your insurance
premiums.
As with any course, flying regularly, at least twice a week, and studying diligently will be less expensive. The FAA minimum training for an Instrument rating is 40 hours (Part 61) of simulated instrument time. Using the PCATD (personal computer-based aircraft training device) and FTD (flight training device) will cut the cost of training. An average cost range is from $4800 (using the PCATD and FTD) to $6200. Adding an instrument rating is not inexpensive, but will provide you with an increased level of skill, confidence and safety. |
