    Shirt Tails

This tradition dates back to the 1930's when pilots learned in tandem-seat airplanes.  The student sat in front of the instructor and when the instructor wanted to get the student's attention, he would tug on the student's shirt tail.  Hence, when the student soloed, cutting off the shirt tail symbolized that he no longer needed the instructor's tugging.   See Training.
